The 24th Lakesea Classic/ Australian Titles 2011 November 26-29th
With the lack of the competitions in 2011 due to many and varied reasons we at the Bay area were not prepared to see whole year pass without any comps particularly the longest continuous event in Australia.
We were also along with the rest of the committee detirmed not to see another year go by without an Australian Titles So it was decided to run them both in conjunction with an AGM all in a 4 day time scale
An Aussie Titles at Durras ? I can still hear the gasps of disbelief.
Well it seem there was no need to worry those that came along were treated to a great set of contests and surfing conditions " best ever "," some great surf"," great spot" ", great Park" " great feed".were just a few of the comments.
We were left with running a comp to include SUP, and Surf Kayaks this was done on the entries but again because of a Varity of reasons ( clash of dates) etc none of these divisions ran We were however under the QC insurance set up able to run a Ocean Ski race from one end of Beagle Bay to the other and back again this gained a lot of publicity and qudos in the Local community . Especially as it was a fund raiser for Fiona House Charity a local respite holiday house on the South Coast. Which Brian and Rosemary Weeks, our ever popular Spit Roast people, started in memerory of their two daughters who both passed with Cystic Fibrosis in their early 20's. This was a great success and congratulations to all our participants in all the weekends events, a combined total of $450.00 was raised through the comps for the cause.
The comps ran as this Friday arvo, 2ft max almost no surf, things did not look good.
Saturday ,howling southerly ,p...ing down, 5ft plus smashing in , comp on hold till10am, on hold till 12noon starting to clear a little, called of till Sunday bacon and eggs lunch and everybody went as far as Moruya Rivermoputh and back searching mostly in vain for a rideable wave, Saturday night spit roast dinner and a few beers and bullshit etc etc. clear sky wind dropping
Sunday first heat 7am sun all day 3-4 ft may even an occasional 5fter, 23degrees ,West wind 90 % of the day at least 20 dolphins in the contest area all day. Everybody sun burnt and gobsmacked by the day and the comp, finished the Best Ever Lakesea Classic in one day well done Mark Spencer 3 in a row, bring on tomorrow and the Aussie titles Monday slight winds (nor east) 2-4 ft all day 7am first heat.
Ran the Aussies through in one day. Very good standard of riders and surfing, if you made the Semis you deserved a medal and in the divisions no quarter was given and the spirit that this comp was surfed in was exemplary congratulation to all .
A special word of thanks to Albert for running a tight and rewarding Aussies event ,the day went without a hitch So thanks to all who attended and hope you can see that waveski surfing is now back in business with a definite direction and new drive. Congratulation to Mark Spencer a very popular win.
Monday evening AGM new committee and a new direction Tuesday 7am wind blown crap, next rideable waves on the south coast about the 10th of December , thank Huey and thanks to Scott and the crew at Lakesea Park for over a quarter of a century of support for the sport of waveski surfing.
See ya next year The Bay Crew PS. Lakesea Classic 2012 ,24-25 March
