The 27th Australian Waveski Surfing Titles were held from the 1st - 6th of May at Emerald Beach, Coffs Harbour NSW. Over the years there have been many competitions in Coffs Harbour. The first day of the 2006 Australian Titles started off in clean 2ft waves with sectioning off shore conditions which continued all day making it interesting for the top 16 riders who met in the first round in two man elimination heats. The winners of the first round progressed to round 5 of the open division. The day then progressed through the first open, open repecharge and seniors rounds. There has also been great coverage of the event from the media. The day finished off with a kid's night at the Holiday park and a huge thanks to Katherine Kearns and Tracey Drescher for organising the games for the kids.
It was a nice surprise to see a slight increase in the conditions on Day 2 and they continued to increase throughout the day. In solid 3ft contestable conditions with a shifting peak, the event continued with the Veterans out first, followed by the B grade, Masters and Open Round 2. The day finished off with a funfilled night at the Moonee Beach Tavern for the Waveski Trivia night. Over a thousand dollars in prizes were won by the contestants and Trivia Wizard Lance Milnes kept the night entertaining. The night raised $272 for the association and a huge thanks to all that attended.
Days 3-5 presented similar 2-3 ft offshore contestable conditions. There were some early upsets in the seniors division with former world champions Rees Duncan and Darren Kearns being eliminated in Round 2. Also former world and Australian Veterans champ, Kevin Marshall was eliminated in the Veterans semi-final.
The AGM was held on Wednesday night. It was a productive meeting and the committee presented the achievements over the last 12 months and opened up discussion for the future development of the sport. The association is now in a financially stable position creating a great platform for developing the sport in the future. Melissa Hardy, Darren Kearns and Larry Adams were re-elected into the same positions. New members of the committee consist of Lance Milnes and Kevin Marshall as the contest directors, Scott Waldron, the WSA Development Officer and Travis Best, the Newsletter Editor.
The finals were held in 2ft off shore conditions at Shelley Beach on Saturday morning. The conditions were predicted to drop even further so the finals were started as early as possible and finished by midday just as the onshore wind started.
Rees Duncan Jnr won his seventh Australian Open title taking out former world champions Darren Kearns and Dave Dinning in the process. Lance Milnes won the Seniors division, Bill Campbell won the Masters division for the second year in a row, Dave Dinning won the Open age division, Graham Roberts won his second veterans title, Lisa Ryan won the women's title and Steve Hoy won the B Grade division.
