Everyone met at the Spit at 6.30 am. The surf was looking good, only about 2 to 3ft with no wind and for some reason no stand-ups on the south side of the jetty. So the boys and girl (Devaki) set up camp for the morning.
First heat hit the water with enthusiasm Some of the young (OLD) boys were loving the conditions. Frank and Eric were tearing it apart and this was only the first heat of the day. As the day progresses we're all becoming aware that the crew were happy to be having a club day again.
It was great to see some new faces at the comp: Paul, our new South African friend and Devaki. We must keep this one a secret. Devaki is our new female member a former world surf kayak champ and she is going to give the other girls at the Aussie titles a bit of a shake up.
With only 15 people at the comp and 15 min heats with best 2 waves there wasn't much rest between heats and the early rounds were ran as a round robin contest witch gave everybody a chance to surf against each other more than once.
One of the down falls of the day was the common problem you have at the Spit with the fisherman on the jetty that you have to watch as you paddle out. But a small price to pay for having good wave without two many stand-ups in the zone.
We finally got down to the finals after dividing the group into A & B Grade. All the finalist had surfed as many as 4 heats at this stage but nobody seamed to mind as the surf was still looking good and only about 5 or 6 stand-ups in the take of zone. The B grade final was very close with only 1 to 2 points separating first to forth. The waves had started to disappear but Paul manage to taking out the final.
The A grade final was made a 20 minute heat with best 2 wave to give some of the boys heat training for the up and coming Australian and World titles. The final was made up of Darren Kearns, Jason Drescher, Matty Kennedy and myself. The waves were becoming hard to find and with the wind starting to blow onshore and conditions were not looking as good as earlier and everybody managed to find some good wave.
Some how Darren Kearns managed to win the final. It was the only heat he won all day and at one stage he was on his way to the B grade final (but somebody went home from the A grade so we put him through to the next round). I think he paid somebody.
The next club day is on the 12th of February, meeting at the Spit at 6am.
Don't forget the QLD Titles on the 12th of March, meeting at the Spit 6am and limited entries.
