| The WA Waveski Association kicked off its first State Round for the year with enthusiasm and commitment. Eleven of the State’s top waveski surfers plus one ‘hopeful’ made the annual pilgrimage to the Bombing Range up at Lancelin. Typically Lancelin can be a day of joy or a total waste of time, fuel and money. Fortunately we were somewhere in between; i.e. small waves, cross shore for the most part and very warm to hot conditions. Luke, Kim and Leon had Daddy Day Passes and were intent on giving reigning champ Rob Borg a run for his money! So following the obligatory fill ya gut with pies from the local bakery we were up and running for the 30 minute trek along corrugations, salt bush tracks and finally onto semi soft sand. Jackie gave the X5 a bit of a workout while Mr Trucking transporter Kim cruised up in his Lexus, the 3 Amigos plus one brought up the rear in Rob’s fancy Pajero with fancy number plates etc. Mike and Gus cruised up in their vintage Tercel. Naturally Leon had the biggest wheels ever on his beloved Landcruiser which made for an in depth conversation with all and sundry about the merits of this wheel verses that wheel etc.
So back to the comp – Contest Director Eric the Bear Tocock organised the man on man format which saw Luke, Kim, Jackie, Richard, Eric and Leon stay in the winners rounds; Mark,Les, Rob, Scott, Gus and Trey (son of Scott) had to fight it out in the minor rounds. First timer Trey Wakefield had his baptism of fire with the waves chomping up the young fella; dear Dad Scott was on hand to provide the fatherly support; on ya Scott!
With the wind turning from a strong SE to a more southerly breeze the waves with any wall to surf were few and far between. Talk about being in the right place at the right time for the majority of us spent most of our heats trawling up and down the comp site looking for that dark mark on the horizon; sorry folks it didn’t really happen.
Without stating the obvious Luke and Kim cruised through their rounds to fight out the final with Leon and Mr Wave Magnet from Cowaramup Bay Lucky Les Johnston.
The age divisions were just as competitive with Trey, Jackie, Luke, Scott, Kim and Les taking our their respective divisions. It was a fun day with thanks to Mike Ruthkay for his tabulation, Scott for hauling the trailer up the beach, Eric for being the ever so nice Contest Director and for everyone else who made the effort to endure the heat, flies, white sand and almost forgot great friendship.
