Western Australian Waveski Association State Round 2
Secret Harbour, 5 May 2007
By Jackie Dillon

Well if it’s not on, it’s not on – Where oh where are we going to run this weekend’s event?  Prior to holding State Round No 2, the experts in weather, wind and swell were deciding if it  was going to be Lancelin (aka The Bombing Range) or tried and tested Secret Harbour.

As it turned out Prince Harry who we understand was on pre-Iraq training, ordered for the whole of the Bombing Range to be closed for target practice -  yeah yeah it’s only a rumour that missiles can reach our shores from the wee depths of Windsor Castle!

Okay onto the serious stuff – Secret Harbour was the call and for some reason only known to Huey the Wind Gods changed their direction from the expected South Wester to a gentle North East wind for part of the morning.  The party faithful arrived in their droves; for what we lacked in numbers we made up for with enthusiasm and ‘let’s get the show on the road attitude!’  The Eagles were playing in the AFL and Rob Borg was on a mission to get on with it and be back in Perth for bouncedown at 2 p.m.

While the swell was up the waves lacked real punch and it required skill and brute strength to select the waves of the day. Scott Wakefield who seems to improve with every State Round cruised through his heats to make the Open final with the rest of the places being sorted out between the little one (Jackied), the Three Amigos and Gus.Well only 4 can make a final and so it was between the Three Amigos and Scott.

Junior Amigo – Rob Borg decided that after years of dedicated and committed State Round surfing his name was going to be on the winners list. Once the hooter sounded he was up and running leaving everyone else in his wake so to speak managing to find the wave of the day and staying on green faces – (mmm leftover from Gisborne).  Richard Croome finished second, Eric Tocock third and Scott fourth.

The Veterans was the only other age division run which was combined with the Grand Masters – Eric Tocock blitzed the division with Richard 2nd, Jackied 3rd, Rob 4th and Gus Ruthkay 5th.

All in all a fun morning even if the conditions were not ideal.  Thanks to Mark Jackson, Tom Freeman and Mike Ruthkay for their judging and also Mike for tabulating.
