Western Australian Waveski Association State Round 3
Cottlesloe Classic,
12 August 2006
By Jackie Dillon

The 9th Cottesloe Classic was held in typical Perth wintry conditions – 4metre swell, intermittent rain and on-shore.  The warm temperatures and surging ocean swell that has hung around Perth for the last two weeks had to end sometime. The weather man got it right and Saturday greeted us with squawling winds and rain. Jackie phoned Eric in transit to confirm that the normal Saturday mal central was empty and thus the Cott Classic would not be disrupted by boardies (not that it normally is as the Rangers are more than vigilant).

After a thirty minute catch up and stuffing around putting up the tent, the comp started – man on man heats and it was on for young and old. ‘Send out the women first’ was the cry (not really there was a very democratic way of drawing up the heats – pick a number between 1 and 7).  Jackie was pegged against El President – Scotty Wakefield and Jackie came up trumps (must have been the new Croc Gum Boots). Eric and Rob had the next heat with Eric taking the colours and Gus and Richard with heat three – Richie who belies his age pipped Gus.  Round 2 saw the winners Jackie, Eric and Richard stepping up the heat with Jackied winning with Eric 2nd and Richard 3.  Jackie and Eric went straight to the final.  In the minor heat Scott and Rob sent Gus to cooking duties (firing up the Barbie). with Scott and Rob meeting up with Richard. Unfortunately for Rob he swallowed a ‘truck load’ of seaweed, strained his back and couldn’t quite string his normal style together; which had  him sitting out the final.

The Veterans was a fitting finale and very close as all four competitors struggled to find clean faces as the wind and white water was unrelenting.  Eric took off on a screamer which saw him blitz the final with the minor places taken out by Richard, Rob and Gus.

A five minute break between Vets and Open saw Richard and Eric get some quick fix energy as the swell was increasing and the wind had swung north west (still on-shore) and the tide was dropping exposing some Cottesloe Rock (reef and capstone).  The final was a case of ‘clean face scores”.  As usual wave magnet Richie Croome took off on a huge wave only to find that it faded to nothing.  Jackied whose ski became air borne on a couple of occasions found clean faces and continued on as she had previously done in the preliminary heats.  Eric and Scott found themselves in no-mans land for about half the heat as the waves were very inconsistent and all over the place.  Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the final siren went. Final places saw Jackie first followed by Richie, with Scott and Eric picking up the minor places.

Meanwhile on dry land Penny and the paparazzi were comparing the length of their lenses and the smell of bacon, snags and eggs was enough to make up for the rain, wind and cool temperatures. All in all a fun day, and I am sure everyone slept well on Saturday night
