Western Australian Waveski Association State Round 4
Secret Harbour, October 2008
By Jackie Dillon

The WA Waveski Association held its 3rd and final State Round at Secret Harbour on Saturday having postponed it from the previous Saturday due to predicated onshore conditions.  I say predicted as the weather turned out to be warm and off-shore.  So rather than factor in predicted conditions last weekend the call was made to run the Round – rain, hail or shine.  Well there was kind of a combination of both with early morning rain to sticky hot and humid and of course small swell but surfable.  Gone are the days of Secret Harbour being a secret as it seems to be the place to be seen, heard and surf.  Due to the local building, the once huge sand dunes that buffeted the westerlies and created more than average surf have long gone.  In place we have typical Perth metro conditions; unpredictable and more often than not closeouts.

Anyway back to the competition.  As this was the final round for the year grand prix placings were still up for grabs.  While the conditions were small, there was still some nice peeling waves with those with the most flex who could ramp off.  Scott Wakefield came from up and coming at the beginning of the year to the one to watch on Saturday.  Well he didn’t disappoint and completed the quinella for the day taking out both the Open and the Masters Divisions.   Les Johnston who is used to surfing Margaret’s waves still made the most of the conditions and continued on with his dominance of the Veterans.  Rob Borg weaved some of his Reo Magic and took out the Grand Masters Division from Jackie Dillon.  Eric Tocock who owns Secret Harbour found waves that no-one else could and was a very close 2nd in the Open.  Mark Jackson gave Scott a run for his money in the Masters and was just pipped at the post.   Soon to be Grandad Richie Croome on his new Go Fast enjoyed the conditions and if only .................

The day was capped off in typical West Aussie fashion with a BBQ courtesy of Comp. Director  - Eric Tocock.

As final results are still being compiled, there will be an end of year windup and AGM on Sunday  16 November 2008.
