Western Australian Waveski Association State Round 4 Secret Harbour, 7 October 2006 By Jackie Dillon
The final State Round for the WA Waveski Association was held in blustery conditions (howling cross-off shore) at SecretHarbour on Saturday. It made for a challenging paddle out; almost calm then a huge set would pulverize all and sundry. As usual the party faithfull turned up in droves with a cameo appearance by Luke Herman. In typical Herman style he blitzed all his events and cemented his name as the man of the waveski moment in WA.
Needless to say, throughout the year there has been some exciting glimpses of 'dark horses' and Saturday was no exception. The Band Aid Kings ala Rob Borg and Eric Tocock displayed absolute innovation with duct tape (metres of the stuff) for both of them pitched their skis into the sand and wound up with talking noses (if you can imagine that!!). A quick surgical consult in the mash tent had both of them amping to make amends in the Vets as both had a quick exit in the Open. Huey came through with the goods with Eric taking out the Vets closely followed by Rob, then Richie Croome and Gus Ruthkay.
The Open was a three-way tussle as to who would take out 2nd, 3rd and 4th as Luke had the final sewn up within the first 10 minutes. Scott Wakefield who has improved quantumly throughout the year displayed some gutsy take offs as the sets were pretty straight and hollow. He deservedly finished second followed by Mr Consistency Richie Croome and then first time Open finalist Gus Ruthkay.
The day was completed with the usual post event BBQ - snags, bacon and egg sandwiches downed with gallons of OJ and water. Ms Paparazzi - Penny Bedford took the usual Canon photos plus copped the first real day of sun burn (ouch!!!). Thanks to Mike Ruthkay for tabulating and Scott for lumbering his big 4WD up the beach.
